Subject: 4 C's Conference
If anyone is planning to be at the 4 C's conference next week in
Chicago (Conference on College Composition and Communication) I would
like to extend a warm invitation to meet and talk and would like also
to plug two sessions.
I have agreed to be at the table to greet and help first time
conference goers for session C on Thursday (1:45-3). If you're free
and so inclined, first-timer or not, stop on by and introduce
yourself; if I'm not busy, we can talk shop.
On Thursday evening from 6:30-7:30 there's a special interest group on
Language, Linguistics, and Writing. I'm one of the scheduled
speakers. This year's topic is What Teachers and Students should know
about Language. I have drafted a handout to go with my talk and would
be glad to pass it on to anyone interested and/or willing to give
feedback. If you want a copy, email me directly; the list won't let
us include attachments. I have till next Tuesday to revise it. This
is a big part of what we are targeting for our Scope and Sequence
project, though I don't pretend at this point to be presenting
anything other than my own views. (I'm also not addressing sequence.)
If anyone else has a version already or wants to try one, I'd be happy
to read that as well. At any rate, it would be good to have a presence
at the session and some lively conversation.
On Friday morning, bright and early (session F.29, 8-9:15), we have a
New Public Grammar panel scheduled. Scheduled presenters include
myself, Jeff Wiemelt, Carolyn Kinslow, and Joan Livingston-Webber, all
ATEG members. Jeff will put new public grammar in context. Joan is
uncertain about attending, but if there will talk on "Grammar Beyond
the Classroom: Whose rules." Carolyn will talk about "Empowering
Students through Meaning-centered Language Awareness: Building a New
Public Grammar in the Writing Center." My talk will be on subject
function as a way into the world of functional grammar. We intend to
be both thought-provoking and useful.
If anyone else is presenting, please let us know.
ATEG is such a lively group in our own conference and on-line. It's
important that we build a professional presence in other ways as well.
Even when we disagree, we share a passion for the subject.
