I want to invite all of you planning to attend the ATEG conference to
think of yourselves as participants in the Scope and Sequence Project.
Our ultimate goal is to give professional advice about what should be
taught K-12, why it should be taught, how it might be portioned out,
how it might be assessed, how state standards should adjust to fit
these goals, and how teachers should be trained to carry all this out.
The goal is to make this available to all ATEG members as it is drafted
out and to invite/encourage lots of response, lots of input. I would
like everyone to feel some ownership for the project.
   Two parts of the project have already been drafted by the New Public
Grammar group--A position on standard English and a Rationale for
teaching grammar--and I will try to fold those into messages to the
list. (My apologies for formatting problems, but the list won't accept
attachments.) Those of you attending the conference can look them over
prior to our discussions. Everyone should feel free to direct comments
to the list or to me.
   And if you haven't signed up, come join us. Amy has organized a
wonderful series of presenters. We are happy to have the Scope and
Sequence project be a part of that.
   A rough schedule follows. Cornelia Paraskevas is drafting the Sequence
section, but won't be with us (in body) in Fairfield.  Martha and I are
mainly facilitators. Tim, Deb, and Amanda are leading discussions, but
also presenting.
