Craig,

For individual sentences, the demo site for the Stanford Parser at http://nlp.stanford.edu:8080/parser/index.jsp may be useful — it does part-of-speech tokenization along with a parse tree (but the output is the kind of thing that is exciting to wonks but not most students (wonkciting?)).

More fun but less transparent in its workings is IBM’s “personality analysis through text samples” demo at https://watson-pi-demo.mybluemix.net/ . It uses a “Big 5” personality factor model, but soothingly renames neuroticism “Emotional Range.”

Subject: frequency analysis of student text

Does anyone know of a student friendly resource for doing analysis of text? Is there a site where a student can load in a text and get back an analysis of word frequencies, sentence patterns, and the like, for their own or for someone else’s writing? Is anyone doing that routinely with students?
