As I read the comments on what to teach in middle school, I am struck by how general the comments are about what should be taught.

Are the issues in middle school about (1) writing Standard English, or (2) considering choices when editing a text?

A central concern for both (1) and (2) is the motivation a student has to be concerned with either issue.

It seems to be that concern about Standard English is becoming more important because it is relatively easy to test and we are going through a time when students are going to be tested more and more.
