Gretchen,

I understand your questions, but I believe the point is that if we don't
engage elementary, middle school, high school, and post-secondary eductors,
all levels, in this very large discussion, we won't clearly see the entire
forest -- just one or two clumps of trees. The problem of WHICH grammar to
teach seems to be unheard of by most pre-college teachers. Sure some of us
"talk it up" at NCTE and elsewhere, but we are a very small minority.
Usually, if I even mention the teaching of grammar to my fellow English
teachers, I get strange looks and comments like, "Don't you know about the
research that shows that teaching grammar doesn't work?" This common
question is disarming and can drag one down a slippery slope that is nearly
impossible to climb up from.

Sound familiar?

Nothing will change, I strongly believe, unless we raise consciousnesses on
all levels. I'm simply saying, let's get the people involved in the
argument(s) before we worry about giving them answers. Maybe they can help
us find some of the answers we seek.

Paul
