At least one author of English grammar texts for the college level,
Martha Kolln, has retained 'old-fashioned' diagramming in her texts (e.g.
'Understanding English Grammar', MacMillan, 1994). I used this text in a
course a year or so ago, and a number of the students appreciated the
chance to analyze sentences this way; another number of them thought it
was an arcane nuisance.
 
Some things never change!
 
By the way, Kolln has an appendix which employs generative-grammar-style
tree diagrams, for those who want to have it both ways.
