Craig,

I too teach writing to underprepared students (in a community college,
though). For the past two or three months I have been working on putting
together a grammar course for more advanced students which borrows from
transformational grammar and structural linguistics as does the course you
teach. I have integrated material on use and rhetorical effects by
including Martha Kolln's book Rhetorical Grammar: Grammatical Choices,
Rhetorical Effects. The main text for the course is Max Morenberg's Doing
Grammar.

I'm excited about the new course but also a bit apprehensive. I'd be
interested to know how students react to the aspects of your course that
draw from transformational-generative grammar.
