Regarding Marshall's and Herb's comments on "humble" - anecdotally, I have
frequently heard the pronunciation of "humble" without the 'h' among
ethnic Mennonites, namely persons with a low German language background or
heritage. In fact, I don't recall hearing such a pronunciation among any
other group, so I have always associated it with Mennonites. I also
suspect it is more common among Mennonites of my generation or older. [I
am not an ethnic Mennonite, by the way.] From Marshall's and Herb's
comments, I now see that this pronunciation is more widely used....One
wonders whether a study of social networks would reveal any patterns.
