Craig,

Thank you very much for the kind note.  Our Alumnus Magazine sent
someone over to interview me yesterday, routine for awardees each year,
and in response to one of her questions it occurred to me that a lot of
people contribute to their field and to the institutions they are a part
of but don't get this sort of recognition.  I'm proud and gratified to
be a participant in as active, productive, and collegial a group as the
ATEG list and to have as colleagues these people I argue with on a
regular basis.

   I wanted to take a moment to congratulate our colleague and friend
Herb
Stahlke for receiving an Outstanding Faculty Award on his campus.
   We all know how important Herb is to the list, how much time he takes
(and how often) to give clear answers to complex questions without
oversimplifying, how he manages to maintain the respect of opposing
sides on an issue through his balance and patience and extensive
knowledge and experience.
   The good guys don't always get their moment in the sun, so I thought
this would hearten us all.
   Congratulations, Herb, for a well deserved award.
