Although I always teach the standard U.S. rule in classes, I also always
mention the British pattern. I can't think of a strong reason why the
British version shouldn't be allowed here; the only thing that springs to
mind is that it leads to one extra punctuation mark if the quoted portion
ends in an abbreviation with a period. I know people may find the
post-quote period unaesthetic, but I figure that reaction is partly the
result of it being marked.
