Back in the day when I was a Classics major, we studied a similar construct=
ion in both Greek and Latin that the grammars called "the ethical dative." =
I'm not sure the term means anything beyond the fact that the dative prono=
un is not the recipient of direct object. Rather, the pronoun serves to em=
phasize the subject. The construction works only if the subject and dative=
pronoun are the same person. I think it works in the plural, as in =0A=

The construction is found mostly in informal registers.=0A=

1. You could interpret the structure either way, but you also need to expla=
in to students the pragmatic meaning of the grammar in addition to labeling=

2. One pragmatic meaning of "gonna" is to have an intention and subsequentl=
y a plan to do something. Intentions entail plans.=0A=

3. You might also mention the informal spoken linguistic register of the po=

4. I was just reading yesterday about the progressive tense in the British =
National Corpus which found that overwhelming percentage of its use (65%) w=
as what the author described as "repeatedness" or in other words, "an ongoi=
ng single event." An example of repeatedness from the corpus in the article=
was "You are once again doing it completely and utterly wrong." The source=
