Another couple of ideas: use controlled composition and model sentences.
 
For controlled composition, take a paragraph written in single t-units and
ask students to combine t-units in particular ways that will have them
correctly create compound sentences without comma splices. For model
sentences, find some interesting sentences in various configurations of
compounds and have students imitate the grammar while using their own words.
