In "A Practical Guide to Researching Language" the authors state:

"Freeborn et al. (1993, ch.1) and Crystal (1995:366-7)also discuss
the question of correctness, and Wray (1996) explores the conflicts
between prescriptivism and descriptivism that arise when academic
linguists have to correct the work of their students. Cameron (1995)
gives a spirited acount of the debate in her chapter 'Dr Syntax and
Mrs Grundy: the great grammar crusade.' On the other hand, Marenbon
(1994) suggests that descriptivism and prescriptivism are mutually
supportive: 'by describing how a certain language is spoken or
written, the grammarian prescribes usage for those who wish to speak
or write that language' (p.20)."(p.125)
