This is a message Bruce Despain has asked me to forward to the ATEG

Subject: Re: The role of English teachers

Eduard,

Here are some comments you might want to post on the ATEG discussion
list; my
mail there isn't going just now.

I wonder if the strong showing of Europeans in the description of
English
grammar in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries might have been due
to the
fact that Latin was the lingua-franca of the Middle Ages and part of
the
instruction of so many of the educated in former years. The Latin
approach to
language has the advantage that many languages have be approached in
the same
way. Perhaps modern linguistics simply hasn't progressed far enough
to overcome
this extreme bias. Perhaps the best way for modern linguistics
contribute is by
incremental insertions of insights into the curriculum.

Bruce
