RE: Copy of: Books on teaching functional grammar

If you're interested in books published in Australia to help teachers teach
functional grammar, here's a start. Their bibliographies and all of the
publishers and associations had many more materials for specific audiences,
such as students, teachers at a certain grade level, the general public,
and linguistics researchers.

David Butt, Rhondda Fahey, Sue Spinks, and Colin Yallop. Using Functional
Grammar: An Explorer's Guide. 1995, reprinted 1996. National Centre for
English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR), Macquarie University, NSW
2109. (I've heard it is also available in the U.S. at Alta Book Centre, 14
Adrian Court, Burlingame, CA 94010. I believe it is used in linguistics
courses in both countries. Many U.S. teachers think this is the best
introduction.)

John Collerson. English Grammar: A Functional Approach. 1994, reprinted
1995. Primary English Teaching Association, Laura Street, Newtown NSW
2042. (This is directed at elementary teachers, many of whom had very
little background in grammar of any kind.)

Board of Studies NSW. Handbook of Grammar for Teachers of English K-6.
1994. Eruditiion Teaching and Training Materials, Level 6, St. James
Centre, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney NSW 2000. (My review of this was
printed in the Proceedings of the 1995 ATEG meeting in Williamsport, PA.)

Frances Christie, Ed. Literacy for a Changing World. 1990, reprinted
1991, 1992, 1992. Australian Council for Educational Research Ltd, Radford
House, Frederick Street, Hawthorn, Victoria 3122. (This anthology provides
a general background. It does not require a prerequisite knowledge of
linguistics of any type. Many of the theoretical introductions are
extremely difficult reading for us in the U.S.)
