Herb,
    I think time reference and discourse together are very much the key. I
look forward to seeing this, but take your time with it.
    One of the books I'm working with (Exploring English Grammar: From
Formal to Functional--Coffin, Donohue, and North) mentions shifting
time frame as one function. We can imagine someone, for example,
looking back after a long day: ("Everything had gone well, but he was
somehow unsatisfied...") and they use the term "retrospective" to
describe that.
    The Australian's use the term "recount" to describe narrative in its
earliest incarnations. If you ask a child in the early grades to write
about, say, a field trip, they will routinely recount the events in
the order they occurred. They don't seem cognitively ready to  move
beyond that. Later, though, we begin to see other purposes to
narrative that make it useful to narrate the events in order different
from the order of occurrence, and we find different vantage points
from which to do that and different ways to make time reference and
discourse reference clear.
    I don't know if that's any help or if I'm just muddying the waters.
I'm bobbing in and out of a sea of student papers. I mainly wanted to
let you know your careful approach to this is very much appreciated.
