Ditto to Jim Barszcs's call for using literary materials when teaching
grammar.  This is not only a good way of teaching grammar; it is even a
better way to teach aspefts of literature, especially the reading of
poetry. Reading Paradise Lost becomes possible for students as soon (and
not until) they realize that it is written in sentences.
