Welcome Palotas Anna from Hungary! One of my graduate Applied
Linguistics classes once examined a study of the success of TEFL
(Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in the secondary schools
of about a dozen different countries. Much to everyone's surprise
(but not mine), Hungary (whose language is after all not even Indo-
European) came out on top, even beating my own country of birth, The
Netherlands. The reason given for the excellent performance of
Hungarian students was, of course, their excellent teachers.
