Martha Kolln is right. The hyphen is generally used  with nouns or adjuncts
for purposes of clarity; if the text is clear without the hyphens,
the cleanest thing to do is leave the hypen out. However, if the writer
felt that the hypens added to the clarity of her statements, she had
the "right" to use hypens--so the professor is wrong.
