I am an employee at The Distance Learning Center, which as you may know
represents a number of universities offering distance learning degree and
certification programs. The Distance Learning Center will be offering a
number of scholarships in 1998. The great majority of them are being
offered through the embassies. However, students may apply directly to The
Distance Learning Center. The greatest number of scholarships are being
offered through Newport Asia Pacific University, which offers an almost
entirely online Master of Science degree program in TESOL which was
designed and is being taught by Professor David Nunan, Dean of the School
of Education. Also, there is a Master of International Business, and a
Master of Arts in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language, designed by the
renowned Japanese linguist, Chikashi Furukawa. Full and partial
scholarships have been made available by the university and its alliances
with non-profit and for-profit institutions and entities and the university
is planning on awarding over fifty scholarships in total. However the
"catch" is that in order to qualify, you must have a computer with Internet
access, and must have enough energy to keep up with Professor Nunan in the
online classrooms. New cohorts begin every eight weeks, with the next one
beginning on March 23rd, 1998. People interested in obtaining information
about scholarship programs can contact me directly at

general, check out the University's web site at http://www.asiapacificu.edu
