I myself have a hard time accepting a reflexive or intensive that
has nothing to reflect or intensify.  The American Heritage Dictionary
used to have a scathing usage note addressing the kinds of
sentences you give as examples but recently has been kinder, noting
however "the implication of pomposity or self-importance" when used to
refer to the writer or speaker.
