Except for the crack on Unitarians, I thought this was a cute, entertaining analysis -- and it seems right on. Is "See Spot run" any different in construction from "Let me think" or "Help me understand?" Of course, we would NOT say *"Let me thinking" or *"Help me understanding." I don't know what that means in relation to this question, however.
Regarding the ubiquitous crack on Unitarians (I am reminded of Grampa Simpson), the correct term, since 1961, is Unitarian Universalists -- or UUs. Since members of this liberal religion tend to be largely intellectual, socially conscious, and culturally astute, many are called UUUs (Unique Unitarian Universalists), but then, I think the first 'U' is redundant. Most UUs, by the way, would not be insulted by the comment since they also tend to have great senses of humor. What they would do, however, is discuss the issue ad infintum.

Anyone have a good resource that would provide both a name and a description of the extent of distribution of what I am loosely calling a 'reduced participial phrase' as seen in (1) below as contrasted with a more customary participial phrase in (2).
