As I read these discussions on the need for teaching "grammar," I am
reminded once again of the need to define our terms. Some folks are
advocating teaching grammar as a description of the language, while others
are advocating the teaching of socially-acceptable usage.

If there seems to be a need, perhaps we should repeat Patrick Hartwell's
definitions of the five meanings of grammar.
