See the first chapter of Geoff Dean's 'Grammar for Improving Reading and
Writing in the Secondary School' (London: David Fulton, 2003), actually
called 'Grammar Wars: Grammar Teaching since 1950'.

On the web see the following:

Nancy G. Patterson, 'The Role of Grammar in the Language Arts Curriculum'
http://www.msu.edu/user/patter90/grammar.htm

Editorial: '"Grammar Wars" -- Beyond a Truce'
http://education.waikato.ac.nz/research/files/etpc/2005y4n3ed.pdf

Richard Hudson, 'Grammar Teaching and Writing Skills: the Research
Evidence'
http://www.phon'ucl.ac.uk/home/dick/writing.htm

Further references:

Tomlinson, David (1994) ŒErrors in the research into the effectiveness of
grammar teaching¹, English in Education, 28:1. [much recommended for its
thorough assessment of the pros and cons].

A useful book from long ago which just preceded the attacks on grammar
teaching in England is Percy Gurrey's 'Teaching English Grammar' (London:
Longmans 1961).

For an ancient battle in progress, see the attacks on a linguist who dared
to suggest that the study of language might be valuable in itself:

Stork, F. C. (1980) ŒLanguage Study in Secondary Education¹, English in
Education, 14:1, 23-9.
Torbe, Mike (1980) Comment on F. C. Stork ŒLanguage study in the
curriculum¹, English in Education, 14:1, 32-4.
Dixon, John (1980) ŒHow to study language and the human mind?¹, English in
Education, 14:3: 25-36.
