Singer Kirsty MacColl Dies In Mexican Boating Accident

Dec 19, 2000, 12:00 pm PT

Singer Kirsty MacColl, daughter of influential Scottish folk singer
Ewan MacColl, has been killed in a boating accident in Cozumel, Mexico,
according to her management. She was 41.

MacColl was vacationing with her two sons and was hit by a speedboat
while swimming. The statement from her manager, released Tuesday (Dec.
19), reads, in part: "The accident happened when Kirsty, a keen diver,
was hit by a speedboat travelling illegally in an area reserved for
swimmers. Her two children were with her in the water at the time, but
both of them are alright. Kirsty's former husband [producer] Steve
Lillywhite is flying to Mexico to be with the children.

"Kirsty MacColl was a bright, fun-loving person as well as a talented
singer and writer who was loved by anybody and everybody she came into
contact with," the statement continues. "Manager Kevin Nixon, who has
worked with Kirsty for four years, said: 'We are absolutely distraught.
I was personally immensely proud to be her manager after being a fan
for so many years before that.'"

MacColl is best known on her native shores and Stateside for her 1987
Christmas duet with the Pogues' Shane MacGowan, "Fairytale of New
York," still a beer-raising anthem in U.K. pubs to this day. The singer
also had hits in the U.K. with the novelty tune "There's a Guy Works
Down the Chip Shop (Swears He's Elvis)," a Billy Bragg cover ("A New
England"), a Kinks tune ("Days"), and "They Don’t Know," a song she
wrote with her late '70s band Drug Addix that didn't hit the charts
until years later when it was covered by Tracey Ullman. MacColl's
latest effort, Tropical Brainstorm, was a tribute to the music of Cuba.
