     My interpretation of this has always been that 'the guy told the girl
     he loved her, she didn't reciprocate, and he was sorry ever after'.
     Even after hearing all the many interpretations (even direct from
     Mike), I still prefer to think of it this way, every time I hear it.

OK, I always took this line to mean that the people were married, and that
instead of happily ever after, they ended up sorry ever after.  Oh, who knows?
