Favorable piece from the Washington Post on the Mayflies, by (the usually
evil) Mark "Friendly Time" Jenkins:

THE MAYFLIES USA "Summertown" Yep Roc/Car
By Mark Jenkins

Friday, August 20, 1999; Page N14

Since Chris Stamey doesn't seem to be making pop music anymore, he can at
least find another band from his native North Carolina whose music
approaches the sparkle and bounce of his '80s outfit, the dBs. He's come
pretty close with the Mayflies USA, a Chapel Hill quartet whose
Stamey-produced "Summertown" is buoyant and melodious in the manner of such
pop-rock revivalists as Big Star, Matthew Sweet and Teenage Fanclub.

The 'Flies aren't quite the Beatles, but they do feature three
singer-songwriters and four sets of bangs. The group occasionally roughs up
its blithe melodies with abrasive guitar, but it generally shows more
respect for melody than for the protagonists of such tracks as "The Stepford
Wives" and "Baby's Got Her Own Ideas." The album's exemplary song is "A
Quick Look Ahead," in which a neglectful girlfriend suddenly realizes she'd
rather be with the singer when she hears "that song on the radio." It's not
a likely scenario, but it does embody the group's vision of a small town
full of sour girls and sweet tunes.

Appearing Saturday at the 9:30 club with the Connells and the Cravin' Dogs.
