I just wanted to remind all of you about the preconference coming up at NCA
on Community-Based Research. This is an outgrowth of the previous
preconferences sponsored by the Interpersonal and Small Group Division. We
have a great day planned (see program below). We still have slots open for
attendees. There is no registration at the door, so do get your
registration in and encourage your students attend as well. We hope to see
you there! -Dawn Braithwaite

PRECONFERENCE
National Communication Association, Chicago, 1997

TITLE: COMMUNITY-BASED SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsors:
Applied Communication Division, Health Communication Division,
Interpersonal and Small Group Interaction Division, Public Relations
Division

Conference Co-chairs:
Dawn O. Braithwaite, Arizona State University West
Lawrence R. Frey, Loyola University Chicago

Planning Committee:
Dale Brashers, Ohio State University
Sandra Petronio, Arizona State University
Jeffrey K. Springston, Indiana University

Statement of Purpose and Objectives:
Making research relevant to the needs of our local, regional, national, and
international communities is a growing concern in the communication
discipline. Two previous preconferences sponsored by the Interpersonal and
Small Group Interaction Division have explored conceptual issues related to
making communication research relevant to various communities. Recognizing
that this interest cuts across traditional areas of study in the
discipline, this preconference is jointly sponsored by four SCA divisions.
The purpose is two-fold: (1) to highlight the work of scholars who have
been doing community-based scholarship; that is, those who have been
conducting scholarly work in various communities and, at the same time,
contributing back to communities via their scholarly efforts, and (2) to
discuss significant issues associated with community-based scholarly work
as well as how to make more traditional types of scholarship accessible to
communities at large.
