Dr. Mary Frederickson, Associate Professor of History at Miami will
lecture in celebration of Women's History Month. The lecture will be
held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 in 212 MacMillan Hall (Great Room). It
will begin at 12:30. This is a brown bag event.

Dr. Frederickson will speak on the topic "The Leadership
Paradox: Catherine Beecher and Women's Education". She will reconsider
Catherine Beecher's work on women's education by analyzing her role in
shaping ideas aboutwomen's leadership. Beecher promoted a radical agenda
for women's education
beginning in the 1820's; she advocated the expansion of roles for
womenwithin the family and in the larger society. Her ideas resonated
throughoutthe 19th century and continue to influence American women in
2007. Beecher's Ohio campaign in the 1830's and 1840's was central to her
development of a national network for women's educational leadership.

The lecture is sponsored by Miami University Libraries and the Western
College Memorial Archives.
