The topic of balancing work and family encompasses many issues,
each which could be the focus of an individual session. At Oakland
University in Rochester, Michigan, a coordinating committee was formed to
plan a Fall 1996 program on this important topic. We raised $3,000 from
campus sources, including $1,000 from the Office of the President, to put
on a 2.5 hour program entitled, "Balancing Work and Family: An Assessment
of Community Needs at Oakland University." A keynote presenter kicked off
the program, followed by individual group discussions over lunch. There
were eleven different facilitated luncheon group discussions that were
assigned to one of three categories: institutional, caregiving or
personal. After lunch, the keynote presenter brought closure to the
program. For copies of some of the handouts, program brochure, etc., send
your postal address to me via e-mail <[log in to unmask]>; there is too
much material to fax and it isn't all in digital format to send
electronically. A White Paper on this program is in production and will
be available on the World Wide Web in the near future.

I also served as a volunteer for a program that was conducted in
February at Oakland Community College, in Auburn Hills, Michigan; this
program "Family Matters III," had both campus and corporate support, and
attracted approximately 500 participants from the metropolitan Detroit
area. For more information on that program, you could contact one of the
coordinators from the Women's Survival Center, Jane Balousek, at
(810)335-2685.
