Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) announces the DEC OpenVMS
system in Oxford (MiaVX1) will be unavailable on Monday, 26 June, from 8am
until approximately 12 noon due to hardware and software maintenance.
 
     Changes being made as part of this maintenance include:
 
(1)  Repair of a CD-ROM drive
 
(2)  Upgrade of the PMDF MAIL program to version 5.0.  This upgrade includes
     the following user-related changes:
 
     (a)  Upgrade of the PINE mail program to version 3.91.  PINE remains
          unsupported by MCIS, but is made available for our clients who
          prefer it to PMDF MAIL.
     (b)  New ability to query the electronic Directory (PHonebook) from
          the To: prompt within PMDF MAIL.  (More information regarding this
          feature will be announced soon.)
     (c)  Enhancements to POP3 and IMAP support.  (POP, the Post Office
          Protocol, and IMAP, the Interactive Mail Access Protocol, enable
          desktop e-mail service from MiaVX1.)
     (d)  The PMDF MAIL program will no longer check command syntax as the
          command is being typed, but will wait until the user presses the
          <Enter> or <Return> key to send the command.  This is more
          consistent with other OpenVMS applications.  For those users who
          prefer the old syntax checking feature, typing the command
          MAIL/SCAN_COMMANDS to invoke MAIL will provide it.
 
(3)  Changes to the default system editor, including:
 
     (a)  Addition of a help line at the bottom of the screen.  This line
          provides information about common key sequences and is intended,
          primarily, for new users.  In addition, it also lists the number
          of attachments for mail messages sent with attached files.
     (b)  Addition of the SET [NO]HELPLINE command.  Users who don't want
          the new editor help line can type the command SET NOHELPLINE to
          remove it.  If this command is placed in the file EVE$INIT.EVE
          in the user's login directory, the help line will be removed from
          the screen for all editing sessions.  The command SET HELPLINE
          will turn the help line back on.
     (c)  Improved MIME support.  Some of the code used in the previous
          version of the editor caused problems for complex MIME messages.
          Support for MIME attachments should be considerably better in this
          release.
     (d)  Addition of the DELETE CURRENT BUFFER command to remove the current
          buffer.  This is useful if you use the editor to edit multiple files.
 
     These changes are already available for testing by typing the command
     NEWEDITOR at the $ command line prompt.  After issuing this command, all
     future editing sessions (until the user logs off) will use the new
     system editor.
