Have you ever started a mail message on the IBM VM/CMS system (MiamiU)
and then realized you don't know the e-mail address?  MCIS is pleased
to announce an electronic mail address lookup facility available from
within VM/CMS  mail.  This facility links mail and the Miami
University Directory  (the electronic phonebook commonly referred to as
PH).
 
WHAT'S NEW?
 
1.  When clients initiate a mail message,  the recipient may now be specified
    by  a new naming convention:
         FIRST_NAME.LAST_NAME   (where a  '.'  period separates the names)
2.  An asterisk can be used as a wildcard if the recipient's formal name or
    proper spelling is unknown.
3.  Neither the name order nor the case is important for a successful PH
    search.
4.  Address searches are equally available on the carbon copy  (CC:) and blind
    carbon copy (BCC:) mail options.
5. Clients may use an individual's nickname (for example, Bob or Steve)
   if that person has registered that familiar name in the PH nickname
   field. (This service is currently available only through PH
   registration  services on Novell network accounts).
6.  Mail will only be delivered to the recipient if that individual has
    registered a preferred e-mail address with PH.   Once a person
    registers a preferred address,  he or she may receive electronic
     mail addressed simply:
         <uniqueid>@MUOhio.Edu
   Please refer to the Miami University 1994-95 Directory, Computing
   Information section (page 9),  for a detailed explanation of Miami
    University's Directory, unique identifiers and preferred
   e-mail addresses.
 
WHAT'S THE SAME?
 
1.  Mail searches for the recipient in the same source sequence; the userid
    NAMES file for nicknames first,  the VM userid list for an account match
    second, then the Ph/Qi database for a name match.  Mail previously searched
    a file, ALL USERS, containing all MiamiU and MiaVX1 accounts, for a match
    for the recipien name.
2.  The directory server contains information normally found only in the
    printed Miami University  Directory.
 
EXAMPLES:
 
The following sections provide examples of  common search scenarios and PH
registration instructions.  Please proceed to each section for detailed

1)  SCENARIO 1:  Look for someone by last name but the search is not
    restrictive  enough.
2)  SCENARIO 2:  Look for someone by last name  where a userid exactly
    matches the  last name.
3)  SCENARIO 3:  Look for someone by first & last name - correct name
     known.
4)  SCENARIO 4:  Look for someone by first & last name - official name
     not known.
5)  SCENARIO 5:  Look for someone by first & last name - official name
    thought to be the name that the perso commonly uses.
6)  SCENARIO 6:  Look for someone by first & last name -by using a commonly
     known nickname, or familiar name, that is not an official name.
7)  SCENARIO 7:  Finding an e-mail address for someone who uses e-mail but
    has not registered with the directory server.
8)  SCENARIO 8:  Address searching also works with carbon copy  (CC:) and
    blind carbon copy (BCC:) mail options.
9)  HOW TO REGISTER with  PH.
 
SCENARIO 1:
Look for someone by a last name.  No nickname or VM userid exists with an
exact match to the last name, but lots of matches are found (search not
restrictive enough):
