When did you call Mucares? I have been here all summer and I have spent a
lot of time on MUCARES and it's never been down for me. I called in the day
our schedules were available and you know what, they were there! Did you try to
call
call when the system wasn't up, ie. no one is allowed to call on the weekends
at this point. Try checking the time you're allowed to call in.

Well....each modem actually costs $1000. You see, these aren't the little
bitty USR sportster modems that you may have in your computer. No...these
modems are a little more advanced than that. They are installed in banks of 16
and they must be able to receive a call and negotiate with all of the known
modems out there. They must be able to recognize that the modem before itself
is being used and it needs to realize that it is his turn to answer (lookup
'rigndown' if you have any questions). Yep..they sure are nice modems! Also,
that fifteen dollar fee goes towards maintaing those modems and all of the
network here, not just purchansing the modems. You spend $30 a semester for
the metro, but it only costs you $15 a semester for internet access. Which is
more advances, a bus, or a computer network. I would say the computer network
and at $15 a semester that fee is very cheap! As it was pointed out earlier,
you could go spend $20 a month for internet access, or you could wait until all
the problems have been worked out with Cisco (software vendor).

If each modem costed $250 (assuming they're very good modems
> and MU didn't get any discounts for them), that would still leave around $8000

I believe that you started the rant by criticizing everything that the
people in MCIS do to provide you with your precious internet access. Paul
Gentle only replied to your diatribe.
