POLITICAL ON-LINE INTERNSHIPS (Democratic Party)

Digitals is a 12,000 plus member on-line activist organization
growing by over 150 members per day. Digitals' mission is to
increasing political participation through the internet. As internet
technology grows more widespread, it cause us to move from a
republic towards a democracy. A true democracy demands an
educated citizenry participating in the debates and the process.
Knowledge and experience with the internet is critical for
educated citizens, activists and academics concerned with popular
Digitals has created numerous internship opportunities for students
across the country. Students can use these internships in a variety
of ways, depending on their own interests and the requirements
of their courses. Internships will require about five hours per week.
Students are free to do more, and there will be some paid internships.

Regardless of the type of internships, each intern will learn to build
web-pages, learn to manage or facilitate a mailing list about a topic
of their choosing, participate in on-line discussion with other interns
and students around the country. In addition, they will be actively
engaged in writing and researching politics as they participate in the
forums, chat-rooms and mailing lists. They will become proficient
in cutting-edge internet technology and resources, and learn critical
skills in politics.

Students interested in an internship should visit
http:\\democratic-party.org\interns
and fill out an internship information form. In addition, faculty members
who desire more information about Digitals should visit our web-site at
http:\demoratic-party.org

There are four main types of internships:

I. Non-Partisan Voter Participation Internships
II. Research Internships
III. Activist Internships
IV. Media Internships

I. Voter Participation Internships.
Through an on-line registration system, Digitals is registering voters
of all parties. The Intern would be responsible for publicizing the registration
 site
(at http://register2vote.org) and choosing a segment of their own communities
for voter-registration. The bulk of the work for this internship would be in
the next month. Interns would communicate the progress of their
voter-registrationefforts to [log in to unmask] once a week.

II. Research Internships

The internet makes available numerous government documents, whitepapers
and organizational information from political organizations, political office
holders and grassroots organizations. Digitals has links to Congressional
Webpages in many states, as well as state and country official webpages.
In addition, Digitals makes available a wide variety of databases
with informationabout Political Action Committees, Grassroots Organizations
and Media Contacts. Research Interns should choose to research a public
policy arena, candidate or political organization and use the web-site to
 facilitate
that research. Interns should also join a Digitals Forum about their
area of interestor create a new forum based on their topic of research. Interns
will become active participates in a mailing list in their states. Interns are
 required
to communicate the topic of their research and how they have used the webpage to
facilitate that research once every two weeks.

III. Democratic Activist Positions

Students who choose this option will learn to use the internet as a tool for
activism. They can choose among one of several projects but all projects
should include disseminating information about Digitals to activists in their
own communities. The goal of the internet activist is to increase political
participation through voter registration, participation in forums and ultimately
to organize their own political organization using the tools that Digitals
 provides.
Students will communicate the status of their activist efforts to
 [log in to unmask]
once every two weeks.

IV. Media Relations Internship

The media intern should become familiar with political newspapers, radio
and television, focusing in particular on locally published magazines,
 community
radio stations that cover local and state politics and cable access television
 stations.
They should become familiar with internet media sites of all of these and any
 other
media. They should write press releases using information they download from
the website, updating members of the media about the latest activities of
 Digitals,
and other internet.
Media Interns would be required to submit a report of their activities once
 every
two weeks to Tracy Wahl at [log in to unmask]

Students interested in creating their own internship program should contact
 Tracy
Wahl to discuss on individualized program.
