Becky,

I am out of town now, so I can't write much.

The faculty CIP field is optional at the moment. We included it at the suggestion of Denise Krallman and some othe university people.

Darrell

Hi all. I have a question I'm hoping to get some feedback on.

We recently noticed the link on the Faculty/Staff section of the HEI website
to access the FD file specs which go into effect for the 2009-10 reporting
cohort. http://regents.ohio.gov/hei/datasubdoc/dataupdates/fdfile.php It
says the web page was updated Feb. 2, 2009. Somehow we must have missed it.
Regardless, in those file specifications is a field titled Academic Area
with the following definition:

Enter the CIP code of the primary program in which the faculty member
teaches or conducts research. For an Unknown CIP code, please enter XXXXXX.

How are you planning to report this?

Here is our dilemma (and I don't think we're alone on this one). We
associate CIP codes with the course content of the courses offered. We also
assign a CIP code to each program/major we offer. I'm guessing here, but
I'm pretty sure that we utilize a wider array of CIP codes for the courses
than we do for the programs. Therefore, it is possible that a faculty
member could teach courses with CIP codes that don't match any of the CIP
codes associated with the programs offered in her/his department.
Additionally, it is possible that a faculty member could teach a course
(Intro to **** for example) that applies to students pursuing programs with
several different CIP codes. How should the Academic Area CIP code be
assigned?

Please share how you're planning to address this issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sincerely,

Becky Geltz
