Randy. I use a variation of programs tailored to the group I am speaking
to. What I have found most useful in general is this following outline.
* Typicl hazards in the home (I use several "souviners" from
investigations to show what I am talking about.
* Hands on fire extinguisher training with burn pan.(I find that
there is a great deal more interest and information retention when
students actually extiguish a fire)
* Video presentation (I use "Fire: Countdown to Disaster")This
gives an excellent look at what the hazards can create and why
extinguishers and detectors are so important.
* Smoke Walk. I pick a room or corridor, and with some minor
safety precautions, send students through a smoke filled room using a
theater type smoke generator. This caps off their understanding of the BIG
PICTURE.
I have seen many positive results in this training including 3
occasions where I received feedback that the training paid off in 2 grease
fires and one couch (cigarette) fire.
