To all:

I would be interested in gathering information from those on this listserv
regarding the ROLE of Resident Assistants, Hall Directors and other "Housing
people" as it relates to conducting FIRE DRILLS and RESPONDING to FIRE ALARMS.

I am attempting to gather this information to be used as general guidelines for
us here at Ramapo College as we embark upon revisions to our current protocol.

Questions:

l. Do you provide master keys to your Resident Assistants? Or do they go to a
central location (dorm's main office) to obtain those keys?

2. Do you have any kind of communication equipment (walkie/talkies, pagers,
etc) that the RAs use during a drill or working fire?

3. Do you train RAs and what's involved with that training? Do you also
provide hands on training with the operation of a fire extinguisher?

4. Who helps to evacuate a dorm? While during a scheduled fire DRILL, I could
understand that having RAs re-enter the building to either bang on doors or
"key open" doors (to make sure that no one is hiding in a closet or under the
bed, etc) -- the scenario changes dramatically when there's real fire. I
would assume that only the fire fighters would go into a situation like that.
(Maybe the RAs would at least bang on doors on their way OUT but no more than
that.)

While these aren't the only questions, these are the ones that come to mind.

If anyone on this listserv can graciously provide me with their written
protocol or policy and procedures, please send it as an email attachment OR fax
it to: 20l-684-7955. If it is WAY too long and involved a document, I would
ask that you mail it to me at:
