Campus Firewatch Update
A service of Campus Firewatch (http://www.campus-firewatch.com)

In today's update...

        Roof fire, Penn State
        New sprinkler legislation in Maine
        Housing shortage, UC Berkeley

-----------------------------------------------------
The following accounts have been taken
from press reports and, unless otherwise
indicated, have not been independently verified.

More information on these incidents will be contained
in an upcoming issue of Campus Firewatch.

Roof Fire
Penn State University
State College, PA

A small fire broke out on the roof of Rec Hall. The fire occurred while
workers were doing some minor repairs. Smoke was drawn into the building by
the ventilation system, making the fire appear worse than it was, according
to a university spokesperson.

Housing Shortage
UC Berkeley
Berkeley, CA

Students recently protested the lack of student housing by sleeping in front
of the university's chancellor's and president's houses.

Bill have been filed in the state legislature to provide state funds for the
construction of new student housing. This is in contrast to the
long-standing policy that student housing should be self-sufficient and not
be underwritten with state funds.

UC Berkeley has been the site of two off-campus student housing fires that
killed four people. In response, the chancellor formed a task force to work
on reducing the risk for off-campus students.

Sprinkler Legislation
Augusta, Maine

Legislation has been introduced in Maine that will require the installation
of sprinklers in all dormitories within five years. More information on
this legislation can be found on the Campus Firewatch BREAKING NEWS page.
