The Philosophy Department invites you to experience the Humanities Center’s first high-profile collaboration with the Performing Arts Series. Mathew Burter’s multimedia “climate change opera” and artist’s talk will take place on Monday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Hall Auditorium. The work includes audio recordings of massive geological processes and represents an unusual synthesis of disciplines and knowledges.

National Geographic called Burtner’s work "a living, breathing Tour de Force...that marries science as the brain, art as the heart and culture as the soul in our search for awareness and sustainability.” Burtner’s music has been performed around the world to significant acclaim. He has won awards in the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Norway, and the United States. His work is supported by major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Science Foundation, and he created music for a number of organizations including President Obama’s US State Department. His research in eco-acoustics has been featured by NASA’s Goddard Space Center, the American Geophysical Union, The Atlantic, Earther, and the Center for Energy Studies in the Humanities (CENHS) at Rice University. This event is part of the 2019-20 MU Performing Arts Series.
