This doesn't surprise me, but I assure you that the faculty are very much
aware of our Matlab license: they receive announcements regarding Matlab
several times a semester.
This spring, there are over 120 students enrolled in MTH courses requiring
them to use Matlab: 3 sections of MTH 222 and 2 sections of MTH 347. The
number will have been slightly lower (90-100 students) for any of the
preceding 4 or 5 semesters, because one-fifth of the faculty who teach
those two courses consider it immoral to use computers or calculators in
Math classes. Still, all math undergraduates take MTH 222 and most take
MTH 347, so it's difficult to see how to publicize it better.
Of course, just as I'll have upper division students who claim not to have
seen the Mean Value Theorem or the concept of linear independence, I'm sure
there are those who will have forgotten using Matlab as well.
