Dr. Keeler,
For the Windows X-server, we are suggesting Cygwin/X - it has the big
advantage that it is free. The Exceed product from Hummingbird is very
nice, but expensive - I don't know if they have educational discounts, but
for regular purchase, it is several hundred dollars.
When using Cygwin, you need to start it, and then do "startx &" to start
it's X-server. Then connect to the cluster using either PuTTY or OpenSSH -
both of these have a configuration setting that you check to turn on SSH
tunneling. The knowledge base articles Jaime mentions should explain this -
if they aren't clear, let me know and I'll re-write them to make it clearer.
I just tried xstata using PuTTY/Cygwin/X and didn't have any problems - if
you are still having trouble, let us know and we can investigate further.

Oops. Sorry for my impatience.

ssh -Y on my Mac fixed the problem with Matlab and xstata. I would
suggest the Quick Tutorial page mention that X11 connections should
be made in this manner.

I had installed Cygwin, X11, and OpenSSH on a lab machine to test X11
from Windows XP. So I was opening a bash shell terminal window and
typing "ssh -X ..." I'll try "ssh -Y ..." the next time I have a
chance. I did not know that Putty had X11 forwarding.
What X Server do you recommend for MS Windows? I suppose if anyone is
savvy enough to use the HPC, they are savvy enough to install Cygwin/
X. I've seen mention of Hummingbird eXceed, but don't know if we have
a license.
Thanks. -Dennis
