How you can help make TechFest 2005 a success.

The purpose of TechFest is to stimulate interest among youth in grades K-12
to study math and science. TechFest 2005, a free family fun event. The core
program is delivered through hands-on, interactive exhibits, demonstrations,
games and contests conducted by mathematics, science, engineering and
technology based organizations such as ASC member societies/chapters, local
colleges and universities, area companies, Wright-Patterson AFB Educational
Outreach Office and others. See <http://www.ascdayton.org/TechFest2005/ for
more details.

Your help and participation will help make TechFest a success. You can help
deliver your enthusiasm and professionalism to the youth or your can help
motivate youth and their parents and teachers to participate. Here are some
specific opportunities for you (or your chapter) to help:

1. Participate in your own society/chapter's hands-on, interactive exhibit
to stimulate youth's interest in math and science. Although there are other
interesting, educational, and entertaining activities and events during
TechFest, societies and chapters hands-on interactive activities delivered
by practicing professionals are the essential core of TechFest. If your
society/chapter is not exhibiting contact Perry Yaney, 937.229-2221, e-mail
[log in to unmask] to find out how your organization can
participate.

2. Be a TechFest Project Champion with a Public School District,
Neighborhood School, Parochial School, or Private/Charter School. Contact
Superintendents and principals to elicit TechFest support, provide TechFest
information, and deliver brochures to the schools/districts in late January
or early February 2005. TechFest 2004 realized only 34 % participation
(defined as one registered student) of public schools and 56% of the public
school districts (also defined as one registered student) in the
Dayton/Miami Valley Area (8 counties). Contact Lyle Lockwood, 937.426.2808
or [log in to unmask]

3. Volunteer to help with registration and possibly other duties (from one
hour to the whole day) during TechFest 2005 on Saturday or Sunday February
19 or 20, 2005 or both. We need no fewer than 112 volunteer hours to handle
registration with society volunteers working 1 hour each during the event.
Contact Alva Karl 937.255.3368 ext 310 or [log in to unmask]

 4. Put TechFest 2005 on your family calendar. Bring your youth to TechFest,
bring your nieces and nephews, bring your grandchildren, and bring someone
else's child. You both will have fun and learn something.

5. TechFest is free for participating families and youth; however, the
TechFest event is not without expense to deliver. There are costs that must
be covered. If you are willing to help with fund raising, sponsorship, or
wish to make a donation; contact Audrey C. Brewer, ASC Chair, 937.904-3102
or [log in to unmask] for information.

If you have questions about TechFest, need additional information before
making your decision, or would like someone to speak to your society/chapter
please call the Affiliate Societies Council Office, 937.224.8513 (12-4 PM),
e-mail: [log in to unmask] A member of the TechFest Project team will contact
you as soon as practical.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Partner with Educators in TIES 2005 - Teachers in Industry for Educational
Support

Utilize the skills and talents of area educators to address your critical
project needs: verbal and written communication, organization and time
management, conflict resolution, attention to detail, creativity, management
of a varied skill workgroup, project management, multi-tasking, in addition
to academic and technical subject matter expertise. Gain fresh objective
insights into the operations of your company.

Have a positive impact on student preparation for the world of work.
Provide an experience of the world of work for which educators are preparing
students to enter. Share firsthand the skills employers seek in employees
and the kind of graduates you seek to hire. Impact curriculum and teaching
methods in order to reduce required on-the-job training. Establish
relationships with educators interested in partnering with industry

The Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium, the University of Dayton (UD), and
Sinclair Community College and Wright State University (WSU) co-sponsor
TIES. It is a dynamic externship program that matches teams of educators
with you, local employers, to experience real world application of
knowledge, complete discrete projects for you, at your site, and create a
curriculum unit to share with students and other educators.

TIES is a 3-week externship experience conducted June 13 to July 1, 2005.
TIES industry partners are asked to contribute $500 per educator toward the
stipend paid - that's less than $6 per hour! The TIES program is an
approved graduate level course in UD's School of Education and Allied
Professions and WSU's College of Education and Human Services.

A TIES program team member will work with you and your organization to
identify an appropriate project for the educator team and match and place
educator teams according to your defined skill requirements.

TIES educators are teachers and counselors from Miami Valley elementary,
middle, and high schools. 40 applicants will be selected to participate in
TIES 2005 and matched in teams for assignment to approximately 15 industry
sites of all types. Former TIES industry partners are encouraged to repeat
participation.

For more information, including a list of previous TIES business partners
and projects, an industry brochure, and the downloadable curriculum units
created by TIES alumni, check out our website at
www.mvtechprep.org/business/tiesb.htm

To become a TIES industry partner or receive additional information, contact
Meg Draeger, TIES Program Coordinator, at (937) 512-2198 or

about while you get a project completed!]

Do you any websites that would benefit your fellow Dayton Chapter members?
Many members have discovered or created internet sites which serve as
valuable resources. If you would like to share those resources with other
members of the Dayton Chapter, send the information to one of your chapter
officers and he or she will make sure it gets to the newsletter.

LIFE MEMBER OR RETIRED STATUS

Members are awarded retired status based on three criteria: Applicants must
be at least 60 years of age, have paid dues for 25 consecutive years, and be
fully retired from all professional positions. Annual dues are $62.50, and
members retain voting rights in Institute elections. Life Status is awarded
only to members whose age and continuous years of paid membership combine to
equal 100. Life members retain voting rights, and all dues are waived. If
you have achieved either status, please contact IIE Member and Customer
support to update your member record. They can be reached at 800-494-0460.

New or returning members: 1

The Dayton IIE Chapter would like to welcome our newest member, Dr. Jennie
Gallimore, a professor in the Department of Biomedical, Industrial, and
Human Factors Engineering at Wright State University.

Chris Calhoun and Julie Duffy passed the Ohio Principles and Practice in
Engineering (PE) exam and is now licensed as a professional engineer in
industrial engineering. Congratulations.

In this section we would like to highlight member accomplishments. Have you
been promoted, certified or otherwise recognized recently? Please let us
know and we'll include the information here. It's not the Dayton Daily News,
but when you count IIE Dayton Chapter members and computer system
administrators reading your e-mail, your accomplishments could be reaching
well over 150 people.

Chapter Activity Report

Each newsletter contains a discussion on one or more items from the Dayton
IIE Chapter Activity Goals. This newsletter addresses the sixth goal - Work
with the Student Chapters to benefit future IIE members.

Student members are the future of the society and thus vitally important to
chapter sustainment and growth. The chapter has two upcoming events which
support student exposure to and involvement in industrial engineering. The
first is TechFest and is directed at increasing elementary and secondary
student interest in science and engineering. The second is a joint meeting
with student chapters - date and topic to be determined. As senior members,
we must continue introducing our youth to science and engineering, in
particular industrial engineering, then supporting and maintaining that
interest throughout academia.
