Dear Students:

It is with pleasure that I now assign your last essay for this course dealing with social justice. As is my custom, and as encouraged by this class we shall use real life situations which will allow you to utilize your well honed skills of critical reflection and thinking as informed by social justice concerns. For this case study we will use our own Miami University.

Case:

As many of you know, this past weekend a group of students representing the Gay and Lesbian community staged a Drag Show Performance fundraiser off campus in Skippers Restaurant and Bar. During this event many students were not only appalled but decided to react violently. Obviously, this violent behavior is both illegal and not to be tolerated. But, another group of students, representing the fundamentally conservative religious right, protested peacefully without incident.

Alternatively, another group of students, again off campus, this weekend are planning to celebrate what they call a Ghetto Festival. During this festival, students will dress up in costumes depicting Hip-Hop's version of ghetto characters such as pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers, and gangsters. Similarly, a group of students, representing African American and other students are considering a protest.

Each of various student constituencies have appealed to Miami University and its President for 'justice'. As you know, these situations both reflect competing claims and rights. Your task is to write a "Brief" addressed to David Hodge, President of Miami in which you identify these competing claims and rights then suggests the position he and the University should take. Your Brief should reflect the Educational Mission of the University, rights and privileges as espoused in both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, and lastly as discussed throughout this semester the various social justice documents, treatises, and ideas. Please note, while you are encouraged to have an opinion, you should balance your opinion with both legal and social justice perspectives. Similarly, please refrain from resulting too simple claims of universality, morality, or political correctness. Your response should not exceed 1,000 words. This essay should be turned in on the Blogs for this course and should be completed no later than Monday, April 26, 2010 at 9:00 Pm.

Thanks

Rodney D. Coates
Professor
