Note to Miami community:  Michael Benson, son of Robert (architecture) and
Rosalyn (fine arts) Benson, died in a car wreck over the weekend.  Michael
was working this summer for the registrar's office on orientation.


The Cincinnati Enquirer, Saturday, June 26
Miami University trustees Friday approved tuition and fee increases of up
to 6 percent, citing pressing technology and salary needs at a time when
the share of state help has dropped.  Cites Richard Little (university
commmunications) and quotes fifth-year student Adam Rinderle as saying, "I
don't appreciate any tuition increases from a university that has as much
money as Miami does."

Dayton Daily News, Saturday, June 26
Miami University's board of trustees on Friday set guidelines for tuition
and fees for the 1999-2000 school year, approved construction of a
child-care center on campus and voted to allow juniors to bring cars to
campus.

The Cincinnati Post, Saturday, June 26
Tuition increases were approved Friday at Miami and Ohio universities.
Miami trustees voted to raise tuition anywhere from 5.5-6 percent for the
next academic year, and Ohio University trustees approved a 6 percent
increase for next fall.

include Linda Ade-Ridder, chairwoman of the sociology, gerontology and
anthropology department and Sally Lloyd, whose field of study is family
violence.

The Miami University Board of Trustees on Friday voted to increase tuition
and fees by as much as 6 percent next school year.  Quotes Miami president
James Garland.

Higher education and local school districts will receive a financial boost
thanks to the $17.1 billion, two-year education budget passed by state
lawmakers on Thursday.  "Miami came out very good," said state Rep. Gene
Krebs, R-Camden.  The school received a funding increase above the rate of
inflation, he said.  Cites Richard Little  (university communications).

Miami's board of trustees approved a change that allows juniors to register
cars with the university.
And:
Scott Telford and Melissa Lohman participated in the 1998-99 National
Championship Horse Show as members of Miami University's equestrian team.
The team finished fifth in the nation.

The Darke County Democratic Party has unanimously endorsed John G. Parks

A surging national trend at universities is building retirement communities
on or close to campus.  Communities will rise soon at Penn State
University, Miami University and Stanford University in California.

named to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Excerpts from recent editorials of statewide and national interest from
Ohio newspapers includes one from the Marion Star that says "rather than
lift the cap (on tuition increases) the Legislature should simply tell the
universities to tighten their belts, control their expenses and come back
again when inflation is higher."
