Miami University's Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Friday to approve
room and board rate increases for the 2000-01 academic year.  Journal-News
quotes Richard Norman (vice president for finannce and business services).

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Saturday, Sept. 18
Miami University's board of trustees supports a proposal to reroute trucks
around Oxford and extend Ohio 63 west toward the city.  Quotes Holly
Wissing (news and public information).  Side story says trustees voted to
increase room and board rates for the 2000-01 academic year by 4.5 percent.

Sharon L. Attaway has been named director of continuing education and the
Business and Industry Center at Miami University Middletown.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Monday, Sept. 20
Story about college students' struggles with credit cards debt says a study
released by the Consumer Federation of America found that the average
credit-card-carrying college student has $2,000 in credit card balances.
While credit applications are available around most colleges, few colleges
offer financial counseling services.  Neither Miami University nor
University of Cincinnati do.  Quotes Mary Van Hyning, whose children Peter
and Laura are freshmen at Miami University this year and Dave Thomas (news
and public information).

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Friday, Sept. 17
Next month the Butler County Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument will
start a series of talks on World War II.  On Oct. 16, John Harlan (MCIS)
will talk about "World War II Resources on the Internet."

The Cincinnati Post, Friday, Sept. 17
Once the exclusive domain of the campus bookstore, textbooks are now for
sale on the Internet, and, in response, campus bookstores are trying to
combine the convenience of Internet ordering with their existing hands-on
services.  Miami University's campus store and the DuBois bookstore in
Clifton and Oxford hope to have their Internet book sites available for
students by the spring semester.  Quotes Frank Koontz (director, Miami

C. Michael Armstrong will deliver a keynote address on the theme

Hometown Hero is Nancy Dameron (alumna) who volunteers for Cincinnati City

and mentors students.  She helped guide Erica Bland, a Withrow High School
student, into pre-law at Miami University.

The state's policy to hold down tuition at two-year colleges should start
attracting thousands of students, the Ohio Board of Regents said.  Miami
University, which raised tuition 5.3 percent, is the most expensive public
university in the Ohio.

Myrtis Powell (vice president, student affairs) has been appointed to the
governing board of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

Dayton Daily News, Friday, Sept. 17
Guest column by G. Thomas Sav, economics professor at Wright State, says
Ohio needs to do better and do more to make higher education economically
affordable and accessible.  Ohio imposes additional but unnecessary
education costs on college students, and the additional costs reside in a
mismatched system of academic or operating calendars among our 13 state
universities.  Lists schools that operate by semesters, including Miami
University.

Review of "Pacific Standard Week," an art exhibition finishing its run
this week at Hiestand Gallery.

Editorial on efforts to preserve three historic buildings on Hamilton's
High Street suggests that the owner of the buildings, Harry Wilks, might
delay demolition.  Notes the civic-minded Wilks has previously demonstrated
"outstanding collaboration" with Miami University's Hamilton campus in
regards to his Pyramid Hill project.

More than 50 Miami University students camped outside Oxford Real Estate
Inc. so they could be the first ones through the doors when it opened.  The
first ones to get inside are more likely to get the choice rental
properties for the 2000-01 school year, according to the students.

Dirk Allen's column is about Bill Neumeier, Miami University graduate and
school counselor in the Edgewood City School District.  Neumeier says he

Undergraduate enrollment has increased again at Miami
University-Middletown, up about 2 percent from last year.  Quotes Dick
