Monday July 3
10-11 Ha Jin: A holiday rebroadcast of Diane's interview with
Chinese-born author Ha Jin.  He won the National Book Award for his
novel "Waiting" (Pantheon), a story set during the Cultural Revolution.
Recently, a Chinese publishing house dropped its plan to issue  the book
in the author's homeland, amid fears of a cultural crackdown by the
government.

11-12 Alain de Botton: A holiday rebroadcast of Diane's conversation
with author Alain de Botton, whose new book "The
Consolations of Philosophy" (Pantheon) offers a twist on the self-help
genre: this collection of advice on dealing with life's everyday
problems is drawn from some of the greatest philosophers of history.


Tuesday July 04
10-11 Jon Katz: A holiday rebroadcast of Diane's conversation with
journalist  Jon Katz, whose book "Geeks" (Villard) celebrates  the
powerful  subculture being created by computer and technology experts.
The author joins Diane to tell the story of his friendship with one
young man -- how they "met" on the Internet,
and how, with a little help and encouragement, this Idaho-native "geek"
found a job in Chicago and got into college.

11-12 Adriana Trigiani: A holiday rebroadcast of Diane's conversation
with  Adriana Trigiani, whose first novel is set in her real-life  home
town, Big Stone Gap, Virginia. This small town is best known to the
outside world as the place where Elizabeth Taylor nearly  choked on a
chicken bone while campaigning with her then-husband Senator John
Warner.  The author joins Diane to talk about how  the novel has been
received in the place that inspired it.  ("Big Stone Gap" is published
by Random House)

The beginning of  Monday encore presentations of our series on American
popular song, with our tribute to Harry Warren. He wrote such songs as I
Only Have Eyes for You, Lullaby of Broadway, We're in the Money,  and

Americans love to drive and millions will be hitting the open road this
summer  on vacation.  But, across the nation gas prices have  soared,
costing consumers millions of dollars and putting a pinch in summer
travel plans. Industry analysts say part of the reason is the U.S.
demand for fuel outways the crude output by oil producing foreign
countries.  And recently, the Federal Trade Commission  began an
investigation into the spike in gasoline prices.  Join Juan  Williams
