is the featured speaker at the opening night of the Democratic
Convention.  His vice president, Al Gore, now becomes the party's
presidential nominee.  Diane and her guests talk about Clinton's
legacy and what it means to Al Gore and the Democrats in this
election year.
         Guests: David Maraniss, Washington Post reporter and author
of Gore biography "The Prince of Tennessee" (Simon & Schuster) and
Clinton biography "First In His Class" (Touchstone); Joyce Ladner,
governmental studies fellow at Brookings Institution

11-12: Mariah Burton Nelson: Athlete and sportswriter Mariah Burton
Nelson talks about how she has been able to put an abusive
relationship with a former coach behind her.  In her new book, "The
Unburdened Heart" (Harper San Francisco), she explores the process
and the benefits of learning to forgive.

covering the party conventions. Today, he brings us the voices of

Friday, August 18, 2000:  Endurance: Shackleton's Disastrous Polar Expedition

        Sir Ernest Shackleton's journey ended with his ship frozen in
Antartic ice for months and finally crushed by the ice. Rescue came
only after a harrowing voyage across 800 miles of open ocean in a
small lifeboat. Author Caroline Alexander discusses her award-winning
book "The Endurance." [Ms.  Alexander will be the guest speaker at
Miami's opening convocation Monday August 21.]
