Greetings!
I couldn't stand sitting inside on this beautiful 70 degree day, so I
dashed to Acton at lunch. There were lots of boaters, fishermen, etc [even
the beach had a dozen people]. Bobbing in the the boats wakes were a
surprising number of waterfowl including 250 + Am. Coots, 8 Horned Grebes,
3 PB Grebes, 14 Shovelers, 4 Blue-winged and 8 Green-winged Teal [finally
gave up on the lake and appeared to fly to the dredge ponds], 4 C. Loons,
25+ RB Mergs, 4 Hooded Mergs, a large raft of scaup with at least one
Redhead [the heat waves off the water made ID impossible at a distance
toward the dam]. Interestingly of the 15 or so Bonapart's Gulls one had a
completely black head already--none of the others appeared to show any sign
of molt yet. A Brown Thrasher was basking in the sun at the group
campground until a Sharpie soared over and spooked it into the bushes.
On another note, Jill and I will not be banding on April 15 (Saturday) so
we might attend the Volunteer Symposium for the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas II
in Columbus. I know Bill Heck is coordinating our area (at least I think),
but I wanted to offer anyone a ride that was interested in going from Oxford.
Cheers
Dave
