Greetings!
We had a great weekend for northern visitors. A little snow on the ground,
some cracked corn, and 'presto' ---Snow Buntings and longspurs. At least 2
Snow Buntings and 2 Lapland Longspurs were present at the Coop on 27
yesterday. Between 8-10 Snow Buntings and about 2 dozen Lapland Longspurs
were at the cracked corn placed along a driveway at the cow farm (with big
blue silo) between College Corner and Cottage Grove on 27. The birds at the
cows were very skittish- every starling that flew over spooked them (there
are a lot of starlings!!). They were unconcerned with people frequently
feeding ten feet away. There concern for flying predators was well
justified as both Northern Harriers and a Kestrel made frequent passes over
them. On one Harrier pass an Eastern Meadowlark flushed out of the field
to the west of the driveway.
Cheers
Dave
