Now for a minor observation...
Working in a writing center, I have had more opportunities to teach grammar (descriptive as well as prescriptive) than I did in the writing classroom.  Every day, for example, I get students asking me to explain verb expansions, pronoun forms, English morphology, and sentence structures.  Part of their motivation is to become better writers, but another part is sheer curiosity, particularly  for ESL students. There's a very willing audience for grammar instruction out there.
